I woke the next morning wondering just how the hell I was going to juggle this now very complicated triangle I was involved in. I’d never ‘done’ brothers before. Once, there were two friends, and they didn’t know about each other, but once they found out, it was a real clusterfuck. Good thing I was only visiting Ocala at the time. Leaving that behind made it easier, but I was living under the same roof this time, and they weren’t friends, they were brothers. Worse, twins.

Still, I had at least two days with Kurt, whose sweetness really appealed to me. I rose and did my morning thing. Margit had breakfast ready when I walked through the kitchen door; fresh fruit, an egg, and some bacon with a side of juice. I guess she really paid attention to what I ate yesterday. There was a red rose sitting by my plate.

“Thanks, Margit.” I held up the rose. She shook her head and smiled, holding her hands out in that universal gesture of “no” and said, “Herr Gunnar.”

So, one of them had sent me a rose. I had no idea which one. This might be a problem. I was hoping there might be a clue when I went to my desk. Breakfast accomplished, I went upstairs carrying my rose with me. I turned on the computer and found an email from Thomas.

Xaviera, please transcribe these letters. There were three audio files attached. Simple office work and no weird instructions. Good. I sat at my desk for the next few hours typing out three letters. Once I double-checked for errors, I placed them on his desk in his study. I was finished. Still, curiosity had me sneaking into his bedroom to look around. I stood there taking in the sight of his bed which was still unmade. I wanted to touch the sheets, sniff them and see if they retained his scent, but I remembered he might have a camera in his room so turned to leave quickly.

I wandered down to the second floor and looked down Kurt’s wing. I didn’t know which room was his so walked slowly, listening for sounds of life; a radio, television, him moving around. I thought about last night; the strangeness of it all, and even the sweetness. He was a sweet man. I sort-off conveniently forgot he was also a Chester-molester who’d stolen into my room on the first night, and touched me inappropriately while I slept. Some part of me understood his temptation, and his wishing to remain in the shadows. He didn’t feel like the man he used to be – at least, not then. Now, he probably felt like the king of the mountain.

I found the last door on the right slightly ajar, and peeked in. Kurt sat in his chair, lifting arm weights, and had earphones in his ears attached to a CD Walkman. He was listening to music and didn’t hear me sneak up on him. Shirt off and in his own world, he looked impressive, even in a wheelchair.
